Australian Labradoodle

Much more than a cross between a Labrador and a Poodle: the Australian Labradoodle is the result of a multigenerational breeding program developed over many generations.

The history of the Labradoodle began in Australia with the idea of developing a suitable assistance dog for people with dog allergies. For this purpose, the people-oriented, willing-to-work Labrador Retriever was crossed with the intelligent, low-shedding Poodle.

Over many years, this original idea developed into the Australian Labradoodle. Responsible Australian breeding programs worked deliberately to establish temperament, health, conformation and coat over many generations. Other breeds were also introduced into the early lines. Today, only the Labrador Retriever, the Poodle, and the English and American Cocker Spaniel remain.

The result is the Australian Labradoodle as we know it today: a friendly, intelligent and versatile companion dog with a characteristic coat that usually sheds very little.

A classic Labradoodle is created by crossing a Labrador with a Poodle. In an F1 cross, the parents are a purebred Labrador and a purebred Poodle. In an F1B, such a Labradoodle is then backcrossed to one of the original breeds – usually a Poodle. Coat, appearance and temperament can therefore vary considerably in these crosses.

By contrast, the Australian Labradoodle is multigenerational – Multigen for short. This means that Australian Labradoodles have been deliberately bred to one another over many generations and selected for traits such as temperament, health, coat and conformation. This long-term, planned breeding is precisely what distinguishes the Australian Labradoodle from many other Doodle crosses.

For us, this breeding program built and documented over generations is an important reason why we chose the Australian Labradoodle.

Australian Labradoodles come in three sizes. Height is measured at the withers: Mini at approximately 30 to 42 cm, Medium at approximately 43 to 52 cm and Standard at approximately 53 to 71 cm.

At Mai Doodle, we breed Medium Australian Labradoodles.

The Australian Labradoodle's coat is soft and ranges from loose waves to curls. The so-called Fleece Coat is particularly typical, while the more tightly curled Wool Coat is also found. The desired coat sheds very little, which makes the Australian Labradoodle interesting for many people with dog allergies.

We believe honest expectations are important: no dog can be guaranteed to be hypoallergenic. Allergies are individual. Anyone who reacts allergically to dogs should therefore spend sufficient time with Australian Labradoodles before making a decision in order to assess their individual tolerance.

There is also a wide variety of coat colours: from Cream, Apricot and Red to Caramel, Chocolate, Black and Silver. There are also different patterns such as Solid, Parti, Tuxedo and Phantom. Some colours change over the course of a dog's life and may become considerably lighter.

What we especially love about the Australian Labradoodle is its temperament. These dogs are typically friendly, people-oriented, intelligent and eager to learn. They want to be part of family life and enjoy shared activities just as much as being close to their people.

Their attentiveness and sensitivity make Australian Labradoodles wonderful family and everyday companions. Many also have qualities that can make them interesting candidates for training as therapy companion or assistance dogs.

Of course, every dog remains an individual personality. That is exactly why, alongside health and appearance, temperament, good socialisation and the right match between dog and person are especially important to us.
